Built by French group La Machine, it can be seen in Yokohama as part of Expo Y150 commemorating the 150th anniversary of Yokohama port. I like how it farts out some kind of mist out of its spider butt and that 3 benign looking people operate it.Also seen in the background is Bastiaan Maris Large Hot Pipe Organ a MIDI-controlled propane-powered fire organ.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Someone really should build a giant Godzilla to stomp around Japan though.

It’s unclear whether its a UAV or RC mini-copter, if it’s RC then it kind of defeats the purpose. Range limits would make it seem that the cops already sort of know where the pot fields are and are just too lazy to walk. Basically a helicopter with odor and video sensors and presumably GPS.

Anyone know what the state of the art is WRT odor sensors? Wonder what the range is and can it compensate for wind? Then again I suppose that’s what the cameras are for.

Bar Stool DUI

Via HuffPo:

“Police in Newark, 30 miles east of Columbus, say when they responded to a report of a crash with injuries on March 4, they found a man who had wrecked a bar stool powered by a deconstructed lawn mower.
Twenty-eight-year Kile Wygle was hospitalized for minor injuries. Police say he was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he told an officer at the hospital that he had consumed 15 beers. Wygle told police his motorized bar stool can go up to 38 mph.”

Previous dorkbotSF presenter and dorkbotsocal overlord Garnet Hertz outdoes himself again with Garnet-enhanced Outrun, an arcade driving game that he modified to take GPS info from an iPhone and render it on the screen. To make it even more challenging and dangerous, the cabinet will also be drivable!

And as a future feature, if there are pedestrians with iPhones hopefully there’s not much latency in rendering them so they don’t get hit 🙂

This is what the cabinet looks like:

Amazingly modern considering it was built in 1926. We’ve been talking about this amongst SRL crew so this is old news to them but it’s just too cool not to post it here too. Reminiscent of a ‘nice’ Screw Machine that doesn’t rip up the asphalt.

I am continuing to plod forward through the 1800’s.

Some may remember a dorkbot (Jun 2007) that Liam and I did on a steam car we built (others were involved) in about 2 months, out of stuff we got at Ace Auto junkyard. None of the stuff we used was ever part of a car OR a train. Few if any drawings were done, and most of the engineering was done in my head.

It has continued to run despite our abuse.

Since then I have built a 500 lb boiler (weight, not working pressure) mostly out of stuff from OSH and Urban Ore. I think my goal is to determine how doable this is with the stuff that is readily available, but I don’t think there is much method to my madness.

Currently am reworking a engine I built 2 years ago. I am applying what I have learned over the last few years and I am trying to make it more efficient. This is taxing my (poor) machining skills but I am improving as I push myself.

A modern green chariot from Fleethorse. To start, the treadmill tilts up and the horse starts walking by instinct and powers the chariot. Goes up to 50mph and has 32 gears. When the horse gets tired it switches over to a DC motor that has enough juice to get to the nearest stop where the horse can rest. There’s all sorts of monitors on the horse to figure out if it’s tired. There are shock absorbers on the treadmill to not jar the horse. There’s also a pooper scooper.

Woburn, MA company Terrafugia did a successful test flight of their flying car recently.  It’s a 2-seater that can take off and land on roads with retractable wings to fit within its lane.

Some videos from their website here and here

The Boston Herald has some more pix here. Will the DMV be issuing pilots licences soon? Shudder to think what kind of DMV test they’ll come up with.
